Wilberforce River (West access)

4WD track in the Canterbury region

(1)

A pick-your-own-adventure route along the Wilberforce River, one of the South Island's stunning braided rivers in Canterbury's high country. There's no fixed track here - with the water flow constantly shifting, you'll need to read the river bed and pick your way through, taking care to avoid the deep and soft sections. The braided channels spread across a wide, gravel-strewn valley framed by mountains, making for a scenic and ever-changing drive. Because the river reshapes itself with every flood, the route you took last time may have moved or vanished, so confidence in choosing lines and assessing crossings is essential. Best suited to drivers comfortable with braided-river navigation. The reward is a genuinely beautiful journey through classic Canterbury backcountry scenery, with the satisfaction of finding your own way through.
