Wangapeka Road

4WD track in the Marlborough region

Wangapeka Road follows the Wangapeka River through its valley in the Marlborough region, leading out to various riverside campsites. The route traces the river corridor, offering a scenic backcountry drive with access to the wider Wangapeka area. The standout obstacle is the Dart Ford crossing, where ongoing gravel migration has filled the ford so that water flows over it even at low river levels. If you plan to cross the Dart Ford by vehicle, take time to identify suitable conditions before committing, and be aware the ford can become impassable after heavy rain. Otherwise this is a straightforward valley track that rewards travellers with quiet river scenery and several spots to set up camp along the way.
