Takutai Beach

4WD track in the West Coast region

Takutai Beach is a short, narrow West Coast beach run up to a river mouth, with sand that softens near the river and other beach users to watch for.

Short, narrow strip of West Coast sand that runs up to the river mouth. It's a quick beach run rather than a big day out, with the sea on one side and not a lot of room to play with.

The sand firms up and softens as you go, and it'll start getting soft around the river mouth, so it pays to keep your momentum and pick your line before you get there. Worth having your tyres aired down and recovery gear handy just in case.

You'll often share Takutai Beach with walkers and other beach users, so take it easy and give people plenty of space.
