4WD track in the Otago region
Serpentine Scenic Reserve in Central Otago is a remote high-tussock 4WD track leading to a historic gold mining site and the old Union Church.
Out in high tussock country above Poolburn Dam, this track runs through to the old Serpentine gold mining site. The big draw is the well-preserved history out there, the Serpentine Union Church and scattered mining relics, sitting in remote backcountry with sweeping views across the Central Otago ranges.
Access is via Long Valley Ridge Road, and you'll want a well-equipped 4WD. It's high, open and exposed the whole way. The last bit near the church can't be driven, so park up and walk the final 400m in.
Weather can turn quickly up here, so carry warm clothing, recovery gear and supplies. Worth noting the track closes over winter, from 1 June through to 1 October. A good trip if you're set up to tackle the remote driving.
