Serpentine Scenic Reserve

4WD track in the Otago region

Serpentine Scenic Reserve Road is a remote 4WD track in Otago that leads to the historic Serpentine gold mining site, including the Serpentine Union Church and old mining relics. Access is via Long Valley Ridge Road from Poolburn Dam, requiring a well-equipped 4WD. The track crosses high, open tussock country with sweeping views across the Central Otago ranges. The final section near the church is impassable by vehicle, but you can park and walk the remaining 400m to reach it. Vehicle access is closed from the Tuesday after Queen's Birthday Weekend until September 30 each year. This is an exposed, high-altitude environment where weather can change quickly, so come well prepared with warm clothing, recovery gear and supplies. The combination of remote backcountry driving and well-preserved gold-era history makes this a memorable trip for those equipped to tackle it.
