Rock And Pillar Ridge

4WD track in the Otago region

Rock and Pillar Ridge is a high 15 km Otago tops run climbing to 1,450 m, with big ridge views, mud holes and ruts, best in dry summer conditions.

(2)

Climbing the southern half of the Rock and Pillar Range, this 15 km run starts about 300 metres north of McPhees Creek ford on Old Dunstan Road. From there it works up to McPhees Rock at 1,310 metres, then carries on north along the tops to Summit Rock at 1,450 metres.

The payoff is a high, open ridge with big panoramic views across the surrounding ranges. The surface is rough and rutted with mud holes here and there, and there's a fair scattering of side tracks branching off, so you've got room to pick your line.

It's a clay base, which turns very greasy and slippery when wet or after snow, so save this one for dry summer conditions. The Rock and Pillar Conservation Area is properly exposed up top, so be ready for the weather to change fast and carry the gear and experience to match. Some folk link it with a loop down Kinvara if conditions allow.
