Random Spur Road

4WD track in the Canterbury region

Random Spur Road is a rugged North Canterbury farm track from Cheviot to Kaiwara Road East with exposed spur driving and big Hurunui River views.

Random Spur Road is a rugged 4WD route in North Canterbury that links Cheviot to Kaiwara Road East, cutting through open farmland and rolling hills. The track delivers wide views of the surrounding countryside, including the Hurunui River and the Lowry Hills.

It's unsealed and often rough, with a steady mix of climbing and descending across the spur. Expect little shade and exposed terrain throughout, plus multiple farm gates along the way, so be prepared to stop and leave each one exactly as you found it. A short side track near the top leads to a scenic trig point with sweeping outlooks over the landscape.

The route is best tackled in dry conditions with a capable 4WD, as the surface can become slippery when wet. It's a satisfying run for anyone who enjoys backcountry farm tracks and big-sky Canterbury scenery.
