Random Spur Road

4WD track in the Canterbury region

Random Spur Road is a rugged North Canterbury farm track from Cheviot to Kaiwara Road East, with big views over the Hurunui River and a trig side track.

A backcountry run linking Cheviot to Kaiwara Road East up North Canterbury way, climbing through open farmland and rolling hills. There's plenty to look at along the way, with wide views over the Hurunui River and the Lowry Hills.

The surface is unsealed and often rough, with a steady mix of climbing and descending as you work along the spur. Not much shade out here and the terrain stays exposed throughout. You'll meet a few farm gates, so be ready to stop and leave each one as you found it. Near the top a short side track runs out to a trig point with views right across the country.

Best done in the dry with a capable 4WD, since the surface gets slippery once it's wet. Good one for anyone who likes farm tracks and big-sky Canterbury scenery.
