Quailburn Road/Historic site

4WD track in the Canterbury region

Quailburn Road is an easy Mackenzie gravel road near Omarama, leading through tussock high country to a historic woolshed and old station stockyards.

Up into the high country near Omarama, an easy gravel road winds through open tussock with wide views across the basin. Quailburn Station was once part of Benmore Run, one of the largest holdings in Otago back in the 1870s.

The driving is relaxed, well within reach of any vehicle. You wind through big-sky country the whole way out.

At the end you can park up and have a poke around what's left of the historic woolshed, mostly knocked down by wind in 2020, along with the old stockyards and other remnants of station life. Good one if you're keen on pioneering history. Bring a camera and take your time wandering the heritage structures and the tussocklands around them.
