4WD track in the Otago region
Paerau Road is an easy gravel route through the open tussock hills of Central Otago, linking the northern and southern Old Dunstan Road.
Rolling tussock country and exposed high-country hills make up most of the scenery along here, with wide views and not much sign of anyone living out this way. It's a remote gravel and dirt route through classic Central Otago landscapes.
The main job Paerau Road does is connect the Northern and Southern sections of the Old Dunstan Road, and it ties in with other tracks around the area. The going is easy by 4WD standards, a smooth gravel surface when conditions are good, and little chance of bush rash thanks to the open terrain.
More of a handy leg for stringing together a longer backcountry trip than a destination on its own. Conditions can shift with the weather out here, so carry recovery gear and have a look at the live comment summary before you head out.
