Paerau Power Station

4WD track in the Otago region

Paerau Power Station in Otago's Maniototo is a short tussock-country access road down to a hydro station on the Taieri River.

A short access road off in the Maniototo, running down to the Paerau Power Station on the Taieri River. Open tussock country all round, and that's the main backdrop. Don't expect much in the way of scenery, it's a quick run rather than a destination.

Paerau and the nearby Patearoa station generally run off river flows through winter. Over summer Paerau draws on the irrigation scheme that stores water up in Loganburn Reservoir and releases it back into the Taieri, while Patearoa only fires up if there's excess water going spare.

Worth a quick detour if you're poking around the wider Maniototo and Taieri catchment and want a look at how the local irrigation and hydro setup works. Otherwise there's not a lot to hold you here.
