Open tussock country runs out across the inland high country here, with the Otamatapaio River close by for most of the drive. A gravel road leads in for about 2 km to where the 4WD track starts, and there's parking at that point for anyone in a 2WD.

From there, properly equipped 4WDs can carry on another 5 km across public conservation land to the final car park. It's a fairly easy run through big open country, and a good way to get within reach of the upper valley before continuing on foot.

Facilities are minimal once you're off the gravel, so bring everything you'll need. Leave gates as you find them and look after the conservation values while you're through.
