4WD track in the Otago region
Otamatapaio River is an Otago high-country 4WD route through open tussock, following the river 5 km across conservation land to the upper valley.
Tucked into the high country of the Otago region, the Otamatapaio River route begins along a gravel road that runs 2 km to the start of the 4WD track. There is parking here for 2WD vehicles, while suitably equipped 4WD vehicles can continue a further 5 km across public conservation land to the final car park.
The drive takes you through open tussock country typical of the inland Otago landscape, with the Otamatapaio River nearby. It is a straightforward way to reach the more remote upper valley, making it a good starting point for those heading deeper into conservation land on foot.
Bring everything you need, as facilities are minimal once you leave the gravel road. Take care to respect the conservation values of the area and leave gates as you find them.
