4WD track in the Canterbury region
Mt Cheeseman is a steep, narrow Canterbury gravel climb up the Craigieburn Range, from beech forest to alpine tussock with big tops views.
The Mt Cheeseman ski field climbs steeply for about 12 km into the Craigieburn Range. The gravel is narrow, winding, and exposed in places, with sharp drop-offs and not much room to pass.
As you gain height, beech forest gives way to open tussock and rocky alpine slopes, and the views across the Craigieburn tops open right up. 4WD is recommended, and chains are often needed in winter when this is the way up to the ski area.
The Castle Hill basin with its limestone formations is worth a stop on the way through. Take your time on the tight corners, watch for oncoming traffic, and carry recovery gear and warm clothing, since conditions can turn quickly up high.
