4WD track in the Otago region
Moke Lake is a short, steep gravel climb near Queenstown in Otago, leading to a remote DOC-style campsite with big valley views.
A short run up into the Moke Valley, just west of Queenstown near Lake Whakatipu. The road is steep, corrugated gravel, and while it isn't very long, the climb is the main character of the drive. Once you crest into the valley the views open right up.
A 4WD is the go in winter when there's snow about, but in good weather most vehicles will manage it fine. The payoff comes as you cross over and the scenery unfolds.
At the top is an isolated DOC-style campsite with a peaceful, remote feel. There's running water and a long drop inside a sheltered building, with camping around $15 per person. Plenty of regulars reckon it beats the spots along the Lake Whakatipu front, like 12 Mile, so it's well worth the trip up.
