Moke Lake

4WD track in the Otago region

Moke Lake is a short, steep corrugated gravel climb west of Queenstown in Otago, leading to an isolated DOC-style campsite with great valley views.

(2)

Tucked into the hills near Lake Whakatipu, just west of Queenstown in Otago, this short run climbs into the Moke Valley towards the Moke Lake campsite. The route is a steep, corrugated gravel road that isn't very long, opening up to great valley views once you crest into the valley.

A 4WD is recommended in winter due to snowy conditions, but in good weather it's manageable for most. The climb is the main character of the drive, and the payoff comes as you cross into the valley and the scenery unfolds.

At the top you'll find an isolated, DOC-style campsite with a peaceful setting and a real sense of remoteness. Facilities include running water and a sheltered long drop, with camping around $15 per person. Many regulars rate it as better than the spots along the Lake Whakatipu front, making the short trip up well worth it.
