A rough, remote run up the Mataura River, following the water up to a hut where you can pitch up for the night well away from anywhere. The country out here is open and quiet, and the track keeps close company with the river the whole way.

At certain times of year the gates may be locked under fire rules, so you might need to ring Mataura Valley Station (03 4485948) to sort access before you head in.
