Macetown (Lower Route)

4WD track in the Otago region

Macetown's lower route in Otago is the harder of the two approaches, with deep river crossings, tight sections and views up to the old township.

(3)

The alternative lower way in or out of historic Macetown, through the rugged hills of Central Otago. This is the harder of the two approaches, with even more river crossings than the main trail, several of them deeper, plus a few obstacles to pick your way through.

The payoff is the scenery, with good views looking up to the old township. Well worth the detour if you enjoy a more challenging drive. The track is narrow in places, so there's limited room to pass oncoming vehicles in some spots. Take it steady and keep an eye out for anyone coming the other way.

River levels change with the season and conditions, so judge each crossing on the day. The main Macetown trail is the tame option by comparison, and this one stays a firm favourite for anyone after a genuine 4WD experience.
