4WD track in the Otago region
Long Valley Ridge Road is a gravel high-country route into Otago's Serpentine Scenic Reserve, with open tussock tops, gold-mining history and big range views.
A gravel road runs along open ridge country here, with the wide tussock tops you get up in the Central Otago high country. It's one of the ways into the historic Serpentine Scenic Reserve, where you'll find remnants of the area's gold-mining days.
The driving itself is straightforward gravel, but you're up high and exposed, so the weather can turn quickly. Worth packing for the tops even on a fine day.
The payoff is the views, sweeping out across the ranges, and a quiet, remote feel well away from the busier tourist routes. The road shuts over winter, closing 3 June and reopening 1 October, so check your timing before you head out.
