4WD track in the Southland region
Lillburn Valley Road is a quiet western Southland gravel run out to Lake Hauroko, New Zealand's deepest lake, on the edge of Fiordland.
A quiet run, this one heads out to Lake Hauroko on the edge of Fiordland. Hauroko is New Zealand's deepest lake at 462 metres, a long sheet of water hemmed in by steep, forested hills.
Mostly gravel the whole way. Rolling farmland gradually gives way to native bush as you near the lake, and the road works its way steadily toward the remote shoreline.
The lake edge is a peaceful, isolated spot to pull over and take in the views, well off the beaten track. Southland weather can turn on you, so come prepared for changeable conditions.
