4WD track in the Canterbury region
Lake Tennyson Campsite access road is a short, corrugated gravel run into an exposed Canterbury high-country lake, best in the snowy colder months.
A short run of gravel takes you in to the camping area beside Lake Tennyson, sitting in an open alpine basin up in the high country.
The access road is easy going and fine for most vehicles, though it's usually corrugated, so take it steady. In winter you can get snow across the track, but there are well-established wheel tracks through it and it's manageable in 4WD.
The campsite itself is spacious and popular, with plenty of room to spread out and pitch up for the night. Just be ready for the elements. This is exposed country and the wind can really get up, folks have clocked it over 100km/h. Sandflies are common around the lake too, so pack for both.
