4WD track in the Southland region
Lake Monowai Road is an easy Southland gravel drive through beech forest to a quiet, remote lake on the Fiordland fringe, suited to most vehicles.
On the Fiordland fringe, this gravel road runs down to the shores of Lake Monowai through dense native beech forest. It's an easy, scenic drive, fine for most vehicles in good conditions, with the bush gradually opening up to lake and mountain views as you near the water.
The lake itself is a quiet, wild spot framed by beech and the surrounding ranges. Popular with anglers, trampers, and anyone after a bit of remote backcountry atmosphere well away from the crowds. Good one for a leisurely drive and a relaxed stop by the water.
A couple of things worth knowing. The sandflies are notorious here, so bring plenty of repellent and cover up if you plan to linger near the shore. Facilities are limited and the country around is genuinely remote, so pack everything you'll need before heading in.
