4WD track in the Southland region
Hollyford Road is a scenic Fiordland gravel drive up the Hollyford Valley beneath the Darran Mountains, easy going and a popular tramping access point.
Following the Hollyford River up its valley in the far southwest, deep in Fiordland country, this gravel road winds through native beech and podocarp forest with the Darran Mountains rising above. Plenty of moss, river views, and big mountain scenery the whole way along.
It's an accessible drive rather than a technical challenge, fine for anything that can handle a maintained but unsealed surface. The Hollyford Road runs to the head of the valley where the well-known walking tracks start, so it gets plenty of trampers using it as a jumping-off point.
Worth doing as an out-and-back in its own right too. A quiet way into one of the more remote and dramatic corners of the country.
