4WD track in the Canterbury region
Hawdon River is a Canterbury high-country route up a braided river bed, with shifting channels and crossings for capable 4WDs comfortable reading rivers.
You're driving the river bed itself here, not a formed track. The valley runs up towards the split where it divides, classic high-country braided country with shingle, channels and crossings that shift with the weather. Big open valley, mountains all round, and the line up changes every time you go.
Because it's a braided system, you pick your own way up the gravel, reading the river and choosing the best crossings as you go. No marked route to follow, so you're navigating off what's in front of you. Suited to capable 4WDs and drivers comfortable with river crossings and an unformed alpine valley.
