4WD track in the Canterbury region
Harrisons Bight is an easy permit-required 4WD route through Canterbury high-country tussock to a quiet corner of Lake Heron, with a short walk to the shore.
Out in the high country near Lake Heron, this permit-required route runs into a quiet corner of the lake. You'll need to grab your permit from DOC first, as access is controlled.
The driving is an easy grade, a relaxed run across tussock flats with the mountains standing up all around. The last short stretch down to the lakeshore is on foot, and the views across the water make the walk worth it.
Worth noting the seasonal closure, it shuts on 5 May and reopens on 1 November, so it's a warmer-months trip. Good one if you want some high-country quiet away from the crowds.
