Tucked away in the Canterbury high country near Lake Heron, Harrisons Bight is a permit-required route that takes you into a quiet corner of this beautiful inland lake. You'll need to grab a permit from DOC before heading out, and be prepared to walk the last short stretch to reach the lakeshore itself. The reward is well worth the effort, with awesome views across the lake and surrounding tussock and mountain landscape. The track is generally an easy grade for the four-wheel-drive section, making it a relaxed outing in stunning scenery. Note the seasonal closure: the route closes on 5 May and reopens on 1 November, so plan your trip for the warmer months. A great spot to soak up the high-country atmosphere away from the crowds.
