4WD track in the Canterbury region
Hanmer Springs Ski Field road is a steep, narrow Canterbury climb through beech forest to open tops, with views back over the Hanmer basin.
The access road up to the Hanmer Springs ski field climbs into the hills behind the alpine spa village. It works its way up through beech forest before breaking out onto open tops, with views back over the Hanmer basin as you gain height.
The road is unsealed, narrow and steep in places. In dry conditions it's generally fine for SUVs and 4WDs, though the gradient and tight corners call for care and low speeds, especially where you might meet someone coming the other way.
Winter is a different story. Snow chains are often needed and the road can close after snowfall, so check the ski field road reports before you head up. In fine weather it's a quiet mountain road that rewards a steady, unhurried drive.
