Hanmer Springs Ski field

4WD track in the Canterbury region

Hanmer Springs Ski Field road is a steep, narrow unsealed climb in north Canterbury with beech forest and alpine tops, suited to SUVs and 4WDs.

This is the access road up to the Hanmer Springs ski field, tucked into the hills behind the alpine spa village of Hanmer Springs in north Canterbury. It climbs through beech forest into open tops, with views back over the Hanmer basin as you gain height.

The route is unsealed, narrow and steep in places. In dry conditions it is generally suitable for SUVs and 4WDs, though the gradient and tight road call for care and low speeds, particularly where you may meet oncoming traffic.

Winter is a different story. Snow chains are often required and temporary closures are possible after snowfall, so check the ski field road reports before you set out. The payoff is a quiet mountain road that rewards a steady, unhurried drive in fine weather.
