Out through the back hills, well away from any sealed road, this one has a proper backcountry feel to it. You climb through open hill country and the views open up across the surrounding land as you gain height.

It's rough gravel with a loose, uneven surface, which is why DOC suggests a 4WD. More a steady run than anything technical, so a good pick if you're after a quieter drive on the back roads.

Access can be limited at the far end, so it's worth sorting your route and a turnaround point before you head out.
