4WD track in the Otago region
Gardiners Track is a rough, muddy Otago hills 4WD run rated medium to hard, with a deep bog hole halfway that rewards careful line choice.
Winding through the Otago hills for a few hours, this is a rough, muddy run that's well-liked among the 4WD crowd. It's generally rated medium to hard, with terrain that rewards careful line choice over outright power.
The one that gets talked about is a deep bog hole around halfway. Pick the right line and you'll be fine, but get it wrong and even lifted utes on bigger tyres have grounded out on bash plates and axles. Some of the ruts run deep too, so larger tyres help on smaller-tyred vehicles. Stock utes have managed it fine in good conditions, and groups have taken around six hours to get through.
Traffic is light, so it's worth bringing a mate or two rather than tackling it solo. It closes over winter, from 1 June to 25 October, and can shut at short notice if things turn to custard. Allow plenty of time and choose your lines wisely.
