Flanagan Pass in Otago is a steep climb to an old airstrip, with deep ruts and bog at the start and big views over Lake Oahu the whole way up.

(5)

A steep, sometimes slippery climb up to an old airstrip, with views out over Lake Oahu opening up the whole way to the top. It's a quiet little spot that most folks reckon is well worth the bumpy drive in.

The terrain starts with deep ruts and a few boggy holes near the bottom, but you can usually pick your lines through the ruts and skirt around the bog. The going eases after the first couple hundred metres. Up top there's a large flat area at the old airstrip, good for parking up and soaking in the scenery.

Beyond the airstrip it's walking only, so leave the vehicles behind and stick to the formed track on the way up too.
