Denniston Brakehead Access

4WD track in the West Coast region

This short vehicle track runs down to the brakehead of the old Denniston coal mine, perched high on the Denniston Plateau above the West Coast. The route gives you access to a striking viewpoint that looks out over the ocean far below, taking in the rugged, exposed terrain that once supported one of New Zealand's most famous and isolated mining communities. The setting is dramatic and weathered, with the windswept plateau and remnants of the area's industrial past lending plenty of historic character. It's a great spot to pause and appreciate the engineering feat of the Denniston Incline and the views that come with the high ground. A worthwhile detour for anyone exploring the plateau and curious about the region's coal-mining heritage.
