Deep Creek Road

4WD track in the Otago region

Deep Creek Road is a remote Otago high-country route over smooth gravel and dirt, linking into Onslow Lake Road past old gold-mining relics.

Open tussock country and high-country hills make up most of the view out here in inland Otago, with a real sense of isolation and quiet, sweeping scenery once you're off the main roads.

The road itself runs reasonably smoothly over gravel and dirt, and it links straight into Onslow Lake Road, so it works well as a connector when you're exploring the wider area. Keep an eye on the junction near the end of the Serpentine track, as it's easy to drive straight past and miss the navigation point.

Worth a stop along the way are Stone Hut and the Pylep Diggings, leftovers from the area's gold-mining and pastoral days. It's a fairly straightforward drive but remote, so come prepared for changeable high-country conditions and limited services. Good one if you're keen on history and big open landscapes.
