Cluden Valley Road

4WD track in the Otago region

Cluden Valley Road climbs through the northern Dunstan Mountains in Central Otago, linking SH8 to the Manuherikia Basin over open tussock tops.

Up the northern end of the Dunstan Mountains, this is the start of a series of farm tracks and access routes that link State Highway 8 to the Manuherikia Basin near St Bathans. The country up here is something special, with rugged outcrops, winding gorges, wide open tussock, alpine cushionfields and rocky tor-covered tops.

The route climbs through high alpine terrain, so expect exposed conditions and weather that can turn quickly. It sits well up in the backcountry, a proper slice of Central Otago high country.

Good run if you're keen to get amongst the tussock tops and take in the wide open views. Worth the effort to get up there.
