Cave - Albury

4WD track in the Canterbury region

Cave to Albury is a South Canterbury riverbed run with bumpy rock and deep water crossings, best tackled with a snorkel and a lift.

(2)

A river run between Cave and Albury that follows the bed for most of the way, so you're picking your line over rock and through crossings the whole time. It's bumpy, hands-on driving, and the water crossings are really the heart of it.

Some parts of the river get surprisingly deep when it's up, so heading in without a snorkel isn't a good idea in higher flows. Watch the rocks too. A few stick out a fair way and submerged ones can catch you off guard. A snorkel is strongly recommended, and a 2-inch lift helps clear the rocks and the deeper sections.

Graded medium to hard depending on the river, and well rated by the crews who run it. Plenty come back for another go. Keep an eye on levels, pick your line through the crossings carefully, and it's a genuinely fun day out on the water.
