4WD track in the Otago region
Blue Mines Road to Logantown is an Otago goldfields track through dry tussock hills, with gold-rush ruins and open views over Lake Dunstan.
Up in the Bendigo Goldfields, reached via the winding Bendigo Loop Road off State Highway 8 north of Lake Dunstan, you'll find the old settlement of Logantown. It got going in 1869 after Thomas Logan struck rich quartz reefs, and grew into a busy cluster of hotels, shops, and a hall that doubled as church and school. Around 400 people lived here at its peak before the gold ran thin in the early 1870s.
These days it's stone foundations, cottage ruins, and a weathered wooden dray that are left, sitting quietly in the dry, tussock-clad hill country. The track runs above the basin with open views across to Lake Dunstan.
Good spot to pull over and wander the relics, with the schist-strewn ground all around that marks out this part of the goldfields.
