4WD track in the West Coast region
Ahaura Kopara Road is an easy West Coast gravel drive through old native forest down to the Ahaura River, where it dead-ends with no crossing.
An easy gravel run that winds down to the Ahaura River, not far out of Greymouth. The drive is a gentle one, with native forest crowding in along almost the whole length of the road, so you spend most of it under an old canopy.
The surface stays easy gravel the whole way, so it's a relaxed cruise. Good one if you just want to take your time and soak up the mature West Coast bush.
Worth knowing the road stops at the Ahaura River, and there's no bridge linking it to the road on the far side. You can't cross here either: the river runs deep, with loose gravel underfoot and steep banks on both sides. Plan it as an out-and-back and turn around at the water's edge.
