4WD track in the Wellington region
Whareama Road is a Wairarapa forestry through-route linking Puketiritiri and Whareama Roads, mixing pine plantation with native bush in the Rewa Bush reserve.
Out in the Wairarapa hills, this one links Puketiritiri Road and Whareama Road through the JNL forest estate. It runs on the Whareama Public Easement, a statutory right of way created under the Crown Forest Assets Act, so the public has legal access through what is still a working forest.
The track threads through the Rewa Bush Conservation Area before coming out the far side, so you get a mix of established pine plantation and a pocket of native bush. It's a proper through-route rather than a dead-end run, which makes for a satisfying connection.
Because harvesting is active here, temporary closures can come up for logging, slips, or fire risk, so it pays to check the latest access notices before you head out. Keep to the formed road and leave gates as you find them.
