Whakarau Road

4WD track in the Gisborne region

Whakarau Road is an easy winding back road through Gisborne's Motu hill country, with small fords and scenic farm and bush land.

Whakarau Road is a long, winding back road through the hill country around Motu, inland from Gisborne. It's a handy shortcut that lets you cut out a large stretch of sealed road while taking in the scenery along the way.

The route is mostly easygoing, rolling through a mix of farmland and native bush. There are a few small fords to splash through, but no major challenges, making it a relaxed drive for most vehicles rather than a technical test.

If you're heading between Motu and Gisborne and prefer dirt over tarseal, this is a pleasant alternative with plenty of farm and bush country to enjoy.
