Waiuta Road

4WD track in the West Coast region

Waiuta sits in the hills above the Grey Valley on the West Coast, the site of one of the region's best known ghost towns. The gravel road leads in to what was once a bustling gold mining settlement that produced nearly 750,000 ounces of gold from 1.5 million tons of quartz.

Waiuta township grew along with the mine, and by the 1930s the population had reached around 600 people. Its isolated location made the town largely self sufficient in terms of facilities, shops and social life, and it became well known on the West Coast for its many sports teams and regular balls.

Today the site is a quiet, atmospheric reminder of that era, well worth the drive in for anyone interested in West Coast history.
