Waipu Caves Road

4WD track in the Northland region

Waipu Caves Road is an easygoing Northland gravel drive through bush and farmland to a limestone cave system with glowworms inside.

Winding gravel runs inland from the coast at Waipu, threading through native bush and rolling farmland on the way to the Waipu Caves Scenic Reserve. Easygoing for most vehicles when conditions are good, with plenty of spots to pull over and take in the country.

The reserve is the reason to come. Park up and head in on foot to the limestone cave system, where glowworms light up the darker chambers. Bring sturdy footwear and a torch, and expect to get your feet wet, since a stream runs right through the cave.

The bush and farmland make for a relaxed drive either way. Good one for a short outing, or as a detour while you're poking around the wider Waipu area.
