Waipu Caves Road

4WD track in the Northland region

A scenic gravel road winding through the Waipu Caves Scenic Reserve in Northland, inland from the coastal town of Waipu. The route is easygoing for most vehicles in good conditions, threading through native forest and rolling rural countryside. The highlight is the reserve itself, where you can park up and explore on foot. The limestone cave system is well worth a visit, home to glowworms that light up the darker chambers — bring sturdy footwear, a torch, and expect to get your feet wet as a stream runs through the cave. The surrounding bush and farmland make for a pleasant, relaxed drive, with plenty of spots to stop and take in the scenery. A good option for a short outing or as a detour while exploring the wider Waipu area.
