Waipakihi Campsite Access

4WD track in the Waikato region

(4)

A short access track dropping down to the riverside campsites at the Waipakihi River, in the Waikato. The route runs through to an end-of-road campsite set in a well-loved spot popular with 4WDers and campers alike. The track itself is generally rated easy, but it has a rough, eroded character with some sizeable washouts along the descent, so a maneuverable 4WD with decent tyres is the sensible choice. Capable drivers have made it down in fairly standard utes without a lift on all-terrains, taking it carefully. The reward is a great riverside camp that's a long-time favourite for many, with low bush rash and a peaceful setting beside the water near the Kaimanawa Forest country. Take care of the place — its continued access depends on people treating it well. Pack in everything you need and leave no trace, as facilities are minimal at this end-of-road spot.
