Rolling hills and farmland make up most of this easy gravel drive, with the best of the coastal views coming early on, in the first stretch out from the port. After that the road settles into farmland scenery.

The rock formations along the way are the highlight, and they keep things interesting most of the drive. Surface is mostly gravel with some sealed sections, and it can get bumpy in places, so it's not one for low-clearance cars.

You can link Waikaretu Road up with other roads nearby to make a longer run along the coastline. Watch for the odd fast driver and keep your speed sensible on the loose stuff. A relaxed outing if you're into big views and unusual geology.
