A short, scenic gravel drive into the hills just out of Thames in the Coromandel. The road itself is straightforward gravel with a couple of small water crossings along the way, winding up through bush past the relics of the area's gold-mining past. Keep an eye out for old mine shafts visible beside the road part way up, a reminder of the diggings that once worked these hills. There are bush walks to further gold-mining sites in the area, though access to these can vary. Note that this is a dead-end road with almost no room to turn around at the far end, so plan your exit and take it steady. An easy, interesting outing if you're after a quick taste of Coromandel history without committing to a big day out.
