Tora Beach

4WD track in the Wellington region

Tora Beach is a wild southern Wairarapa coast 4WD run on easy gravel, with seals, shipwrecks and good fishing, plus a steep clifftop descent to the beach.

(3)

Out on the remote southern Wairarapa coast, Tora Beach is a wild, scenic stretch of coastline that rewards the drive in. Seals are often out soaking up the sun, and there are shipwrecks dotted along the shore. Good fishing, surfcasting, diving and surfing here, and the surfcasting near the campsite is particularly good.

The track itself is an easy, cruisy gravel drive. The access B roads are narrow though, so take care and watch for dust when you're following another vehicle. At the Tora end there's a steep, narrow incline down from the cliff tops to the beach, with near-vertical drops in places and the chance of oncoming traffic, so go slowly and be ready to give way.

The campsite is basic and on the rough side, so please carry all your rubbish out. The council has tried to close the sites before.
