Tora Beach

4WD track in the Wellington region

Tora Beach is a remote southern Wairarapa coastal track on easy gravel, with seals, shipwrecks and great fishing and diving along a wild rocky shore.

(3)

On the remote southern Wairarapa coast in the Wellington region, Tora Beach rewards the journey with a wild, scenic stretch of coastline. Seals are often out soaking up the sun, and shipwrecks add to the scenery, making it a memorable spot for fishing, surfcasting, diving and surfing.

The track itself is an easy, cruisy gravel drive, but the access B roads are narrow, so take care and watch for dust when following other vehicles. At the Tora end there's a steep, narrow incline down from the cliff tops to the beach, with near-vertical drops in places and the chance of oncoming traffic, so go slowly and be ready to give way.

There's a basic campsite here — it's on the rough side, so please take all your rubbish out, as the council has tried to close the sites in the past. A private alternative route runs from Riverdale Station over the hills to the southern end of Tora; it needs advance booking and a track maintenance fee, with huts and paid hunting available.
