4WD track in the Canterbury region
Rakaia Valley is a hard braided-river 4WD route in Canterbury's high country, with shifting channels, deep soft crossings and remote alpine scenery.
A genuinely hard route through the stunning, braided Rakaia River in Canterbury's high country. This is a true off-road adventure, weaving across ever-changing river channels and rocky riverbed beneath breathtaking alpine scenery. You can spend a full day or longer exploring this remote and rugged valley.
Because it follows a living river, the map provided is a best guess based on past conditions, so you'll need to read the water and adapt your path constantly. The riverbed has deep, soft channels that have turned parties back, including near where Redcliffe Stream meets the Rakaia at the edge of the range. Always check depths before each crossing.
Access from the Lake Heron side crosses private land, so arrange permission in advance ([email protected]) before heading in. Travelling with at least one other vehicle is strongly recommended, as the bogging risk is high. Carry recovery gear including a winch and shovel, and have solid river-driving experience. Check weather and river levels, bring plenty of supplies, and expect little to no cell reception deep in this remote area.
