Porter Road is a trickier forest route winding through the hill country of the Bay of Plenty. The track threads through native and plantation forest, following the lie of the land as it climbs and dips through quiet, scenic surroundings.

This is a more challenging run aimed at confident drivers. The surface becomes slippery and traction hard to find after rain, and depending on the day a winch may be needed to get through the steeper or greasier sections. Come prepared and ideally travel with a second vehicle.

This route suits drivers with some experience and properly equipped 4WDs rather than casual sightseers. Pack recovery gear, check your vehicle before you set off, and allow plenty of time to tackle it at a sensible pace.
