4WD track in the Waikato region

Owawenga Road is a Waikato gravel run climbing into the Rangitoto Range through native bush, with clay patches, deer about, and a locked gate at the end.

(2)

Climbing into the Rangitoto Range, this one mixes easy cruising with rougher going the further you head in. It starts off as simple gravel road and gets progressively rougher and more rugged, with patches of clay along the way.

The track winds through native bush with good forest views, and there's a fair chance of spotting deer. A few big stags have been reported along here. The driving stays mostly straightforward gravel, so it's an accessible run for most well-prepared vehicles while still giving you proper backcountry scenery.

The main track eventually comes to a locked gate near a hut, which marks the practical end of the route. No point pushing on past the road the hut sits on. A relaxed, scenic forest drive with a touch of rough terrain and good odds on wildlife.
