Otaki Gorge

4WD track in the Wellington region

Otaki Gorge is a Wellington gravel road climbing into Tararua Forest Park alongside the Otaki River, an easy scenic run to a popular picnic area.

(1)

Climbing up into Tararua Forest Park, this gravel road follows the Otaki River through native bush. It reopened in mid-2025 after years of closure, and it's a cool, scenic run alongside the river.

The road is well formed and in good condition, so it's more of an easy forest drive than anything technical. Most vehicles will manage it fine taking it steady.

There's a popular picnic area at the end, though the car park fills up quickly when it's busy. If you can't find a spot, look for the overflow parking next to the ranger's house, which has a walkway down to the picnic area. Good place to soak up the bush and the river, and a handy starting point if you're heading further into the Tararuas on foot.
