Out on the rugged west coast, this is the more interesting of the routes down onto Muriwai Beach. Wilsons Road starts off sealed before switching to gravel, then turns into a proper sand track as you near the coast.

An easy, scenic drive that's popular as a quieter way onto the beach, with less traffic than the main access. The terrain is straightforward, though the entrance near the lake can be a little bumpy. Drivers rate it well as a lovely, fun run down to the sand.

A permit is required to drive on Muriwai Beach, and as of late 2025 it's a multi-day process to apply for and receive it, so sort that out before you head out. Keep your speed down and watch for other road users, the main thing to be mindful of along here.
