Manorburn Dam

4WD track in the Otago region

Manorburn Dam is a remote Central Otago gravel route climbing through tussock and rocky crags to a still 1914 dam, with old huts and cribs to explore.

(2)

Up through open tussock and past the rocky crags Central Otago is known for, this gravel track climbs into proper high-country solitude. It ends at the Upper Manorburn Dam, built in 1914, which holds back a long, narrow reservoir that sits dead still on a calm day.

The surface is a clay and rock base that turns slick after rain, so all-terrain tyres and decent ground clearance are worth having. Dry, it's an easy scenic drive, but most rate it Easy to Medium depending on the weather.

It's a peaceful spot for a break, with big views and a scattering of old huts and cribs along the dam edge to poke around. The dam level can drop right down at times. There's a seasonal closure on the access, so check the track's open before you head up.
