Short detour that doesn't really go anywhere, but it's a good little drive if you enjoy a quick technical bit rather than a long haul. Worth a crack if you're already up the Mangahao way.

In the dry it's reasonably straightforward, and it's been done on small 4WDs like a Jimny on highway tyres. Things change fast with the weather, though, and it gets a good deal harder once the surface turns slippery. The main section is known for its ruts, and there's a boggy patch you may have to deal with.

Wet runs are noticeably tougher and reward more capable tyres and a careful approach. Most who've driven it put it around medium grade. A satisfying short challenge that packs a bit in for its length.
