Lake Rotopokaka aka Coca Cola Lake

4WD track in the Northland region

Lake Rotopokaka (Coca Cola Lake) is an easy coastal Northland offshoot with cola-coloured swimming water, dunes, beach access and self-contained camping.

Lake Rotopokaka, better known as Coca Cola Lake, is a short, easy offshoot in coastal Northland. The lake takes its nickname from its distinctive cola-coloured water, tinted by the surrounding vegetation, and sits close to the dunes and beach.

The track is brief and straightforward rather than technical, dropping down to the lake and on to a self-contained freedom camping area with beach access. With a swimmable lake and easy access to the coast close together, it's a relaxed detour rather than a serious 4WD challenge.

It's a handy spot to stretch your legs, take a dip in the unusual lake, and enjoy the dunes and coastal scenery. Keep in mind the camping area is reserved for certified self-contained vehicles, so plan accordingly if you intend to stay overnight.
