Lake Onoke Viewpoint

4WD track in the Wellington region

Lake Onoke Viewpoint in the southern Wairarapa is an easy gravel drive to a lookout over the lake and wetlands, popular with fishers and birdwatchers.

Down near the southern Wairarapa coast, Lake Onoke spreads out behind the dunes where the water meets a stretch of wetland. A short gravel drive runs out to a viewpoint looking over the lake and the country around it.

Easy going the whole way, more of a relaxed gravel run than anything technical. Good quick detour if you're poking around the area and want to stretch the legs.

The viewpoint is popular with local fishers, so bring a rod if that's your thing. Worth keeping an eye on the lake margins too, the shallow wetland edges pull in plenty of birdlife.
