4WD track in the Otago region
Kinvara Road is an Otago 4WD climb up the Rock and Pillar Conservation Area, with switchbacks to a flat tussock ridge and big alpine views.
A solid climb up the Rock and Pillar Conservation Area, this one gains around 1,000 metres through a string of switchbacks to about 1,350 metres above sea level. Up top the country opens out onto a flat tussock ridge with views going for miles, and a real alpine feel near the snowline.
The track runs about 10 km. It first passes through a deer farm before crossing into the conservation area at around 900 metres. Suited to 4WDs, with the climb moderately challenging. Stick to the designated path, as some sections of the ridge have been deeply gouged by tyres and the high-country tussock is slow to recover.
From the top the flat ridge carries on through to Summit Rock if you fancy continuing on foot. During fawning season, mid-November to mid-December, use alternative access to steer clear of protective hinds.
