Kinvara Road

4WD track in the Otago region

(1)

Kinvara Road is a 10 km 4WD track in the Rock and Pillar Conservation Area of Otago. The route climbs roughly 1,000 metres through numerous switchbacks to reach about 1,350 metres above sea level, where the terrain opens onto a flat tussock ridge. It first passes through a deer farm before entering the conservation area at around 900 metres elevation. During fawning season (mid-November to mid-December), use alternative access routes due to potential hazards posed by protective hinds. The track is suitable for 4WD vehicles, and drivers should stay on the designated path to protect the fragile high-country environment, where some sections of the ridge have been deeply gouged by tyres. From up top the views are expansive, and the ridge connects through to Summit Rock for those wanting to continue on foot. A rewarding, moderately challenging climb with a genuine alpine feel near the snowline.
