Hori Bay Road

4WD track in the Nelson region

(2)

Hori Bay Road is a scenic gravel drive near Nelson, running out through forestry land toward Hori Bay on the coast. The route is mostly easy-going gravel, winding through stands of plantation forest managed by One Forty One, who recommend a 4WD vehicle. There's a legal easement along the road, so the route itself is generally accessible to the public. The going is straightforward for most of the way, though the final section near the bay can get rougher and more challenging, particularly after winter storms. Expect the first kilometre from the highway turnoff to be the bumpiest part of the drive. It's a short, pleasant outing rewarded with coastal scenery once you reach the bay. Note that the forestry company occasionally closes the road, so check the live comment summary for current gate and access status before heading in.
