4WD track in the Nelson region
Hori Bay Road is a short gravel forestry drive near Nelson, easy going apart from a potholed first kilometre, with coastal scenery out at the bay.
A short gravel run out through plantation forest toward the coast at Hori Bay, not far from Nelson. The forest is managed by One Forty One, who recommend a 4WD, and a legal easement runs along the road so it's generally open to the public.
Most of the going is easy gravel and pretty straightforward. The catch is that first kilometre from the highway turnoff, which is the bumpiest part of the drive and badly potholed. The final stretch near the bay can get rougher too, especially after winter storms.
It's a pleasant little outing with coastal scenery once you reach the bay. The forestry company does close the road from time to time, so check the live comment summary for gate and access status before you head in.
